Golden Rule Spiritualist Church was chartered on July 2, 1950. The first president and pastor was Rev. Gladys Haegeman. Meetings were held on Sundays in the dining room of the Chippewa Hotel, as well as in homes and meeting rooms whenever there was someone available to lecture or give messages.

The summer months brought many attendees, but the harsh winters forced meetings to be discontinued. On July 9th, 1955, a charter was issued for the Northern Lake Michigan Spiritualist Camp. The plot of land was donated by Cleyo and Nellie Harris as a camp site.

One part of the former logging site was cleared of underbrush and a platform was erected with wooden benches in front. The Women's Relief Corp presented the camp with a flag, and a pulpit was built. The members of the State Board dedicated the camp.

During the first summer, not one Sunday was lost due to weather. The following summer, a Medium's cottage was built. Around 1957, a church building was erected on the property. The church was offered the use of this building for meetings when the camp was not in session.
